What Payment Methods Are Accepted in Taxis?

The available payment methods in the taxi are:
- Credit and Debit Cards: Visa, Mastercard, American Express (Amex).
- Cash: The driver will provide change.
Note: Regarding payments in foreign currencies, the driver may choose whether or not to accept the currency. If they do accept it, it is up to the driver to decide whether to accept it with or without currency conversion. The decision always lies with the taxi drivers.
When Is Payment Made?
Payment for the taxi is always made at the end of the trip. The taxi driver will stop the meter once you arrive at your destination and will announce the total fare.
What If I Disagree With the Announced Amount?
The price of a taxi ride depends on several factors, as explained in this article. The meters comply with existing laws and regulations, so the fare is not negotiable: you will need to pay the amount indicated.

The price of a ride depends on several parameters. Here’s how the fare is calculated.
Components of Taxi Pricing
Téo Taxi drivers use a regulated meter pricing system set by the Commission des transports du Québec (CTQ). The meter pricing is determined by two criteria:
- Time of Day: Day or night
- Vehicle Speed: This leads to either a time-based fare or a distance-based fare.
Here’s a summary table from the CTQ that outlines pricing based on travel conditions.
Fare Structure and Amounts
- The initial amount includes a fee of $0.90 + taxes ($1.05).
Day Rate Example (from 5 a.m. to 10:59 p.m.): If the vehicle is moving at less than 22.537 km/h, the meter is in timer mode, accumulating $0.77 per minute (or per fraction of a minute). Once the vehicle's speed is equal to or greater than 22.537 km/h, the meter switches to distance mode, charging $2.05 per kilometer (or per fraction of a kilometer).
Night Rate Example (from 11 p.m. to 4:59 a.m.): If the vehicle is moving at less than 22.723 km/h, the meter is in timer mode, accumulating $0.89 per minute (or per fraction of a minute). Once the vehicle's speed is equal to or greater than 22.723 km/h, the meter switches to distance mode, charging $2.35 per kilometer (or per fraction of a kilometer).

How Does the Driver Calculate the Price of a Taxi Ride?
The fare is calculated using either a physical or virtual taxi meter. The driver activates the meter at the start of the trip to begin charging, and stops it once you reach your destination.
Why Does the Price Vary When I Take the Same Trip (Same Pickup and Destination)?
The meter calculates the fare for each trip. The amount will correspond to the actual route taken and will include:
- Pickup Fee
- Distance Fee
- Time Fee
The number of kilometers traveled can vary from day to day, even if it’s the same route. The time taken for the trip may also differ due to traffic conditions. These two variables explain why the fare for the same trip may differ.
What Factors Can Influence the Price Upwards or Downwards?
The price of a taxi ride can vary based on several factors, such as:
- Traffic, red lights, congestion, roadwork, accidents, detours due to closed roads
- Any other factors that may increase waiting time, the number of kilometers traveled, or the time taken by the vehicle to travel below 22.537 km/h.
All of these elements can influence the final fare.
Can a Driver Modify the Price of a Taxi Meter?
The driver can only choose between the day rate or the night rate. They cannot change the price indicated by the meter.
Can a Driver Modify the Configuration of a Taxi Meter?
No! Drivers cannot modify the configuration of a taxi meter. Meters are strictly regulated by accredited companies recognized by the Commission des Transports du Québec (CTQ).
Taxi meters are regulated by agents accredited by the CTQ. They are designed, tested, and approved by these agents. Therefore, when taxi drivers need to install a meter, they must go to a garage approved and authorized by the CTQ. The installation follows several steps and ends with the affixing of a seal bearing a unique number on the meter.
Moreover, taxi drivers are required to validate their meter within a timeframe set by the CTQ. The meter is the taxi driver's working tool and ensures compliance with current regulations.
