What is the price of a taxi ?

The price of a taxi ride depends on several factors. Explanation of how a trip fare is calculated.

What makes up the price of a taxi ride

Taxelco drivers use the taximeter rates regulated by the Commission des transports du Québec (CTQ). The taximeter determines the fare based on two criteria:

  • The time of the trip (day or night);
  • The vehicle’s speed, which determines whether waiting time is included in the fare.

The following table from the CTQ summarizes the fares according to the conditions of the trip.

 e3995b30-0d31-4514-85d1-58125b974953

1: A $0.90 fee + taxes ($1.05) is added to the initial fare.

  • Example using the base fare (trip starting between 5:00 a.m. and 10:59 p.m.): when the vehicle is traveling at less than 22.537 km/h, the taximeter operates in time mode and charges $0.77 per minute (or fraction of a minute). As soon as the vehicle’s speed reaches or exceeds 22.537 km/h, the taximeter switches to distance-based pricing and charges $2.05 per kilometer (or fraction of a kilometer).
  • Example using the nighttime fare (trip starting between 11:00 p.m. and 4:59 a.m.): when the vehicle is traveling at less than 22.723 km/h, the taximeter operates in time mode and charges $0.89 per minute (or fraction of a minute). As soon as the vehicle’s speed reaches or exceeds 22.723 km/h, the taximeter switches to distance-based pricing and charges $2.35 per kilometer (or fraction of a kilometer).

How does the taxi driver calculates the price of a taxi ride?

 The fare is calculated using a physical or virtual taximeter. The driver activates the taximeter at the beginning of the trip to start the fare calculation and stops the taximeter upon arrival at the destination.

Why does the fare vary for the same trip (same pickup and destination)?

The taximeter fare is calculated for each trip. The amount charged corresponds to the actual trip taken and is made up of:

Initial fare + Fare per kilometer traveled + Fare per minute

The number of kilometers traveled may vary from one day to another, even when taking the same route. The time it takes to complete the trip may also vary depending on traffic conditions. These two factors explain why the fare may be different for the same trip.

 What can cause the fare to increase or decrease?

The fare of a taxi ride can vary depending on many things, such as:

  • traffic, red lights, traffic-related slowdowns, road construction, accidents, and detours caused by road closures;
  • anything that may increase waiting time, the number of kilometers traveled, or the amount of time the vehicle travels at a speed below 22.537 km/h.

All of these elements can affect the final fare of the trip.

 Can a driver change the fare displayed on the taximeter?

No. The driver must apply the taximeter base faire or night fare. He can't modify the price o the taximeter.

Can a driver change the configuration of the taximeter?

No! Drivers cannot modify the configuration of a taximeter. Taximeters are fully regulated by companies accredited by the Commission des transports du Québec (CTQ).

Taximeters are regulated by agents accredited by the Commission des transports du Québec. They are designed, tested, and approved by these agents. Therefore, when taxi drivers need to have a taximeter installed, they must go to a garage authorized and mandated by the CTQ. The installation process involves several steps and ends with the application of a seal bearing a unique number to the taximeter.

In addition, taxi drivers are required to have their taximeter inspected and validated within the timeframe specified by the CTQ. The taximeter is an essential tool for taxi drivers and ensures compliance with applicable regulations.
