How to become a taxi driver in Québec ? 

In Québec, to drive a taxi or a vehicle used as a taxi, you must hold the required licences, perform a basic inspection, and comply with the rules governing remunerated  passenger transportation by automobile.

All the information needed to become a taxi driver are available on the SAAQ website, which is still the best reference at all times.

Regulations

In Quebec, passenger transportation is subject to specific requirements concerning both vehicles and their drivers. Only the Société de l'Assurance Automobile du Québec can authorize someone to work as a taxi driver.

Drivers or owners of a taxi or a vehicle treated as a taxi must meet the rules governing the remunerated transportation of persons by automobile.

 

Being authorised as a taxi driver

To submit an application, the SAAQ requires 5 mandatory conditions:

  • Hold a Class 5 driver's license (or higher) AND have 12 months or more of driving experience (excluding driver experience gained with a probationary license;
  • Being able to understand, read and speak French.
  •  Provide a criminal record check certificate attesting to the verification of your criminal record. This document must be issued by a municipal police department or the Sûreté du Québec. Documents from private firms or the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) will not be accepted. You must obtain this document before beginning your registration with the SAAQ.

  •  Take the online training course offered by the CFTR. You must pass the exam and obtain your certificate of completion.
